A Christmas Decor Refresh
It was time for a Christmas Decor Refresh this year. With the kids away at school the usual Dickensian-style Christmas venue was set aside, and I completely started over. The theme this year has been to refresh and purge, so I have been going around our home and redecorating each room to have an updated and modern appeal. Also, we have purged many things, and it feels soooooo good! The truth is we now love our home better than ever! There is a more minimalistic approach in the decor which is a big departure from my usual decor style. Many trips have been made to the Goodwill to drop off more items from the big purge. And now parts of the home we previously avoided have become areas of solace. Now on to Christmas.
Christmas is anything but a minimalistic holiday for us. We adore Christmas and all the trimmings, so minimalism isn’t going to work here in our Christmas decor refresh. Instead, the approach was to update the look into a more modern one. Formerly, I spent hours poring over old Victoria magazines for inspiration while spending hours on homemade ornaments with Victorian flair and arranged Christmas antiques in groupings. Cranberry, forest green, and antique gold colors dominated the look which was rich and lovely. Now the vision changed into that of a white tree with bright Christmas red and sparkling gold decor. This new palette was completely off the beaten path for me, but I was enthusiastic to try something new.
To start with I purchased large glamorous poinsettias with glittered edges and jeweled centers in red and champagne along with oversized ornaments, mercury glass, feathers, faux fur, and lots of stars. It’s glitzy, sparkly, glamorous, and festive. We love it! My favorite aspect of the new decor is the faux fur because it’s so soft, fluffy and white. It reminds me of a quiet snowy day in January after the new year. Another fun new purchase was the tinsel garlands we strung up in the house instead of traditional green fir garlands. Also new are the sparkly wire stars from Pier 1 hanging from our ceiling. In the center of the room is a big star which reminds me of the Christmas story and the star of Bethlehem. It feels very appropriate to have that symbol hanging in the center of the living room.
Another big change is the fresh flocked tree. This is our very first flocked tree ever and we love it! There are a couple of benefits to having a flocked tree. The first is that it comes already on a stand. My husband greatly appreciated not having to fiddle around with setting the tree up later. We just brought it in the house and set it down and it was ready. Easy! Another benefit is that we don’t wake up to needles all over the floor every morning that need to be swept up. But the best part is that the tree absolutely gorgeous with its fluffy, snowy white branches!
Plenty of bright gold and red ornaments fill the tree. I love the shatterproof mercury ornaments and the cut glass ones. Gold curls, berry picks, and lots of poinsettias cover the snowy white tree for a brand new, festive look. My new favorites are the large, oversized ornaments which I placed here and there in the living room. They give a wonderland feel to the room and a childlike playfulness that appeals to all ages. There are also a few on the mantle with the grouping of white, oversized candlesticks.
However, even with all the changes there are still plenty of traditional things about our Christmas. Outside is an old church pew and lamp post with fresh garlands and rich red bows. Plenty of lights and wreath are around and old Christmas songs playing. And of course, I still make lots and lots of Christmas cookies every year. There would be howls of complaints if I didn’t- lol! Sometimes changing direction is a good thing and a necessary one as I have found this year. So, no regrets on the Christmas makeover 🙂 Hope you enjoyed the Christmas Decor Refresh today!
May your week be blessed as we are in the last few days to Christmas!
