Autumn at Hidden Bluff 2023: Entryway Decor. September 12, 2023.

The days are still warm, but the mornings are getting darker and cooler. I often find myself reaching for a robe to warm up these days. A glance at my closet reminds me it is just about time to switch out clothes, and dusk comes earlier now. All the signs are here of the coming autumnal season. Time to plan our annual fall charcuterie to celebrate the season, but before that the autumn decor must go up. Autumn decor is a tradition that must be kept.

More and more my preference is to bring nature into the home: a simpler and less cluttered look; focal points as opposed to a jumble of trinkets; and using what I have. My muse often looks around our yard to see what is growing and available. Or I take walks to see what nature has to offer for decor. Using natural materials feels more fallish than anything else and is satisfying to the soul.

While the trees show the barest of reddish orange around their edges the world is still very much green. I decide to keep our entryway in that green hue as well.

Limelight hydrangeas, ghost berries, and Japanese maple leaves from our yard make a lovely early autumn floral arrangement in an aged-looking urn planter. Investing in classic vases and planters for the home makes decorating easier as they can work in any season.

I keep the seasonal decor items minimal using such things as a couple of golden pheasants and a few golden acorns scattered about. Rich fabrics like velvet that can be made into a makeshift runner in a moment are always a classic in autumn.

Last years’s tobacco leaf garland is given a new look with some old eucalyptus sprays sitting in my office and is placed over the door giving the entryway a homey look. Warm wall art goes up next to it. My green floral rubber books stand in as decor.

Another classic urn holds its style with a touch of fall and sits on the entryway shelf.

A basket of faux apples and pears by the door adds to the spirit of the season. Clipped branches from outside are placed in a tall rattan vase.

It is all very warm and simple in the golden autumn light.
