Books on my Nightstand September 2023
Books on my Nightstand September 2023. September 1, 2023.
The rain came and brought an end to the long hot drought this week. Waking up to the cooling rain was a pleasure to finish August on. And now that September is here all the romance of the autumn season is beginning to descend on us. My goal is to appreciate each part of the season and not bring out the Halloween decor just yet. I want to enjoy each vibe that Autumn brings and not hurry through it at light speed to get to Christmas. And books are always a wonderful to savor life slowly and meditatively. They are companions created of ideas and words to help us better articulate our own selves through different lenses.
And so, my list of books to read never gets any shorter. And while many books get read and crossed off many more are added on. So, the list is perpetually growing. One trilogy I had jotted down months ago was chosen for this month came up with some very mixed reviews; however, I am reading it anyway. The reason was because one of the authors, Michael Phillips, wrote his books under the inspiration of the deceased Victorian Scottish writer, George MacDonald (MacDonald also inspired CS Lewis). Interestingly, it was then Michael Phillips whose writings then were responsible for bringing back to fashion George MacDonald books. Having only read one of MacDonald’s books so far, I plan to read more. But in the meantime, the connection with MacDonald has me curious as to Phillips writing style. And so, I am picking up his Stonewycke Trilogy.

The Stonewycke Trilogy by Michael Phillips and Judith Pella is the multigenerational story of an aristocrat family in Scotland and the turbulent troubles they face. Margaret Duncan is our heroine who navigates family troubles that threaten to break them apart. One reviewer described this trilogy as “Downton Abby in Scotland” which seems to be apt given the nature and number of struggles the family goes through- mystery, murder, greed as well as forgiveness and redemption. If you want to join me you can read this trilogy for free here. Have a lovely September reading!
Have a beautiful day!
