Honeysuckle Iced Green Tea

Anne gathered some sprays of pale-yellow honeysuckle and put them in her hair. She liked the delicious hint of fragrance, as some aerial benediction, above her every time she moved.

God is gently watering the garden this morning. It is a refreshing moment after our first couple of hot days for the year. The rain is light and misty, but enough to replenish the ground. While taking my usual morning walk through the garden the newly bloomed woodbine caught my eye. (Woodbine is an older name for honeysuckle and more often seen in old literature and poems). Even in the rain its sweet smell finds me, and I follow it to the source. If one is going to have a cottage garden, then planting a honeysuckle is not up for negotiation. As one of the oldest and most treasured of the traditional cottage garden plants it is well worth including. Old garden gates or potting sheds smothered in woodbine will beautify the garden with old world charm as well as perfume the air with its sweet jasmine-like scent.

Knowing the season for woodbine blossoms isn’t long, I take a handful of fresh gold and pink blossoms back to the house to make a syrup. A handful is all that is needed to make honeysuckle syrup. This pale golden nectar is light, floral and delicious, adding pleasing floral note that accents the green tea without overpowering it. The syrup can be used for other things as well, so feel free to experiment. Today I am using it in iced tea.
