Ideas for Indoor Harvest Decor
About 2 years ago it somehow got started in my Facebook circle that I am obsessed with pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin spice in general. I can’t even remember how it all began, but no, I am not even close to pumpkin spice obsession. In fact, my favorite fall latte is gingerbread. However, the joke took on a life of its own, and pretty soon I was receiving pumpkin spice gifts in the mail. Pumpkin spice candles, fragrance oils, mugs, and even a pumpkin spice mystery book arrived at our home from anonymous jokesters. The pumpkin spice mania has not died down either. I’ve had people friend each other over this. Someone started an official petition online to stop me from talking about pumpkin spice. Never mind that most of the pumpkin spice talk was coming from people posting weird pumpkin spice products to my page.
Two years later the joke has not died down and continues to gain steam. Yesterday, someone showed up at the market I sell product at with a huge gift basket of pumpkin spice goodies. There was yogurt, whipped cream, cookies, donuts, coffee, sachets- all pumpkin spice! But I think the crowning prank this year was the article a friend of mine wrote. He is a humorist for a local newspaper and wrote an article about my obsession and the need for intervention. And yes, my name was used although he claimed it was fictional. Well, today’s post on fall decor has plenty of pumpkins in it, so I imagine this will only fuel the fire of my supposed pumpkin spice obsession-lol!
Last week I shared some ideas for harvest decorating outside using pumpkins and a new color palette. This week I want to share ideas for inside the home. Since seasonal decorating is a big love of mine, I keep a special closet for seasonal decor items that I rotate. My past system of decor involved a more visually “cluttered” look with lots of colors, shapes, lines. The displays always looked nice, but I was ready for a change.
My usual harvest routine was to dot the house with orange pumpkins and lots of harvest knick knacks. This year I’ve updated the look with shifting to a simpler palette and display. The mini displays I have throughout the house only have a couple of colors and intentionally placed items. Having simpler seasonal decor that blended in better with our regular home decor was the focus. Using a combination of pumpkins, leaves, and candles all came together wonderfully. What I love most about it is the simplicity of the look. It feels fresh and clean.
Faux pumpkins are great to have on hand and there is an abundance of them right now in all different shades. While I used real pumpkins outside, I prefer to use faux pumpkins inside. This is because sometimes I need to move things around and faux are lighter. Plus, the faux pumpkins have been really nice the last couple of years, and I love the look. I found some nice ones on a really good sale and bought a lot of different sizes and colors. Back at home I arranged them in groupings. The white and green pumpkins worked well in our living room and resulted in a seamless look. You can see in the above picture the white pumpkins with the white candle looks clean. A couple of autumn leaves gave it a nice touch.
Candles are an easy and great way to add to the decor. They are the perfect fall look with the days getting darker and impart a sense of hygge. I kept the look simple by placing a single candle amongst pumpkin groupings, creating a very elegant look. Obviously, jar candles are the best and safest option when using in decor. Pictured below is a Yankee candle in an attractive jar with a copper top. I admit that the scent name “Glittering White Pumpkin” caught my eye as I love fancy names for products:) In the display below I paired the candle with two green pumpkins of different sizes for a touch of contrast. Again, I kept up the theme of a couple of scattered fall leaves.
Finding good faux fall leaves has been tricky in the past because they tend to be over-bright and too fake looking. However, this year a local store had some awesome realistic-looking ones that worked perfectly with the look I wanted. The leave stems had realistic looking fall leaves in shades of crimson, deep burgundy, brown, and sage. They were perfect and a great price! So, I purchased a bunch of them. Later, I clipped the leaves from a couple of them, spreading the individual leaves around the home on the mantel and near the pumpkins and candles. It gave the effect of fall leaves blowing around outside, and I loved it. Things were coming along great!
Linens are another element of my seasonal decor. Tablecloths and runners and embellished towels add more detail and fill in the look. Seasonal pillows are a favorite of mine. A couple of seasonal pillows is a great way to make the home festive and cheerful. Below is a pillow I got at Pier 1 with a cute applique pumpkin on the front. Having a solitary seasonal pillow added the right touch to this cozy sitting area in our living room. A cream-colored furry throw adds a cozy, lived-in element to the look.
Happy decorating and have an awesome week!
There are so many ways to be creative with fall! It’s been fun thinking out of the box a bit more this year. And the results are tranquil and relaxing which is just what we need after a long work week 🙂 Someone pass the pumpkin spice lattes please….
