March Book Pick 2022
This month I’ve only got one book pick and it is based on a little-known subject in our country. It was when we lived in Hawaii that I first read about the history of the leper colony on the island of Molo ka’i. Also known as Hansen’s disease, people who got this were forcibly removed from society and isolated on this island. This is due to the stigmatizations and lack of knowledge about Hansen’s. Apparently, Molo ka’i was not the only leper colony in the U.S. though. I learned that a leper colony that existed in Louisiana as well. This well-recommended book called “The Second Life of Mirielle West” by Amanda Skenandore that is a historical fiction on the subject. Of course, it quickly became my March book pick 2022.

The Second Life of Mirielle West by Amanda Skenandore
Mirielle West is a rich socialite and wife of a silent movie star living the good life of the twenties. She contracts leprosy which results in her exile from her husband and children to Carville in Louisiana and the start of a new life. Carville is more like a prison than hospital and the patients have no real hope of leaving although Mirielle tries to escape. Unfortunately, she must learn to adjust to her new life which is a dark and sad one. I imagine historical fiction fans will like this one and I am looking forward to diving into it. These kinds of books are a great way to become acquainted with lesser known history in our country which is why it is one of my favorite genres to read. Feel free to share your thoughts on the book below and of course….
Have a lovely week!
