May Book Picks: Garden Flowers

Spring shows what God can do with a drab and dirty world.

May Book Picks: Garden Flowers. May 3, 2021.
The month of May has arrived and bestowed us with her floral bounty in all colors. One of my favorite things to do at this time of year is prowl the garden nurseries for the new arrivals. I have been fairly stalking my favorite nursery for Bells of Ireland, which should arrive anyway now. Last week, they had Canterbury Bells, which I just planted in the garden. This year, I have added Jupiter’s beard and several varieties of phlox to fill out the front yard. If you haven’t discovered the therapy of a garden yet, you should. There is hardly a better hobby for enjoying the beautiful world around us. Perhaps you need more visual motivation to get you going. Today’s May Book Picks are an inspirational look at garden flowers and a gorgeous addition to your coffee table book collection.

Each one of these books is a worthy addition to the coffee table, not just for ideas, but they are attractive books as well. The gardener and romantic home decorator will appreciate each one of these books.

May Book Picks
Vintage Roses by Jane Eastoe with photography by Georgianna Lane. I have been following the gorgeous, floral, Parisian photography of Georgianna Lane on Instagram, so this book is a treat. This book has page after page of heirloom roses to drool over and had me going to the David Austin site to order new roses. Additionally, the book includes care instructions and a history of roses. A must-have for rose lovers!

The Book of Flowers by Pierre Joseph Redouté. If you are a fan of vintage flower prints, then you need this fat book on your coffee table. Redouté’s famous floral watercolors are collected in this book for a historical perspective on flowers and art in Paris greenhouses and gardens. The prints are beautiful, and you will find yourself slowly poring over Redouté’s floral art.

Susannah’s Garden by Debbie Macomber. Not all coffee table books, I picked a fun-looking, fictional read by Debbie Macomber with a garden backdrop (surprise). The book stood out to me because it’s about a woman in midlife dealing with typical midlife troubles of aging parents and adulting children, and this is precisely where I am at right now. A little comforting and relatable fiction is helpful. This is my first read by Debbie Macomber, and I am excited to read it!

Green Shades: An Anthology of Plants, Gardens and Gardeners by Elizabeth Jane Howard. While browsing garden books, this anthology called to me. This quaint book is a collection of garden essays, journal entries, poetry, stories, etc.- all for the garden-inspired. If you enjoy short, inspiring, and contemplative pieces, then this would be perfect.

The Art of Flowers from the editors of Victoria. I have been a Victoria fan for YEARS! My bookshelves are filled with vintage Victoria magazines and books, so when they announced their new publication on FLOWERS, I preordered one, of course! This book features stunning photography of flower bouquets and home decor displays. This is an excellent book for ideas on incorporating flowers in decor throughout the house, both inside and out. A must-have for Victoria fans!

Enjoy reading!
