Moody Table Decor at Hidden Bluff
“I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.”

Last Halloween I went trick or treating for the first time in years. Our 11-year- old nephew was living with us at the time, and so of course, I took him out. As it turned out we have some serious Halloween action in our neighborhood and our nephew was goggle eyed over it all. Halloween is not quite the same for him in his home country of Germany, and he quite enjoyed the American version of the spooky holiday. For myself, I was quite moved at the number of older people who went all out for the kids to help keep their sense of wonder alive. It was pretty amazing actually! And inspiring! I informed my husband that since our kids are grown, we now needed to “up” our Halloween game for the neighborhood kids as well. And so, it started. This is the very first year I am decorating for Halloween.
It was important to us to keep things on the sort-of wholesome side (no chainsaw murderers), so a vintage gothic theme was chosen. Think of Edgar Allen Poe or Dracula. Since we will be having helpers for our big event, I wanted to prepare a food table of pizza sliders and caramel apples. So, we needed a spooky table. Spooky tables are not something I have ever done, so this was new territory for me. In the end, moody or gothic might be a better description for the look that resulted.

Victorian literature was a great place to draw on for ideas. It also made sense to use Victorian literature as a muse since my general decor style has a definite bend that direction.
A black velvet table runner set the tone. Very gothic.
I didn’t go all black with decor. For a more Victorian-themed color palette I chose burgundy as an accent color. An assortment of burgundy candles created a moody look.
With all the rustic wooden dishes I have I knew they would be perfect dressed up with red grapes, apples and pears. Additionally, gold dishes and tapers made a great contrast for an old world look.
I found some dying burgundy roses in the clearance section at the florists. They were a perfect addition to the table.
The Raven was a last minute find at a clearance sale. Very Edgar Allen Poe. It added just the right touch.
Have a spooky evening!
