Mr. McGregor’s Salad Bar

Mr. McGregor's Salad Bar

Mr. McGregor’s Salad Bar. February 27, 2024.

Last Easter I came up with an idea for Mr. McGregor’s salad bar. The only problem is I misspelled Mr. McGregor as can be seen on the little sign. Never mind. Small details. There is always next time. The important thing is the adorable salad bar on the large basket that looks garden worthy. Getting to make your own personal salad with an array of options is always a treat. It is also handy for diverting guest traffic to other parts if you are serving large groups. This salad bar is on its own table away from the main food table. I wanted to keep it simple, flavorful, and colorful. The vegetables needed to be the focal point as after all, Mr. McGregor did inspire this. So, for all you Peter Rabbit fans and lovers of Spring decor here is an adorable salad bar presentation.

A very large flat basket was used to put the salad bar in. This is not necessary if you don’t have one, but if you do a basket does make a great presentation. I used small white bowls for different toppings. The ones shown came from a discount home goods store and were very inexpensive. They have gotten a lot of mileage in our entertaining. Additionally, make sure to include salad plates for your salad bar.

Butter lettuce is a great choice for this. It looks like it just came out of the garden, and it is mild tasting. Sweet cherry tomatoes on the vine were perfection! Of course, we had to have carrots. And don’t forget the cucumbers! For some savory items we included sunflower seeds, chopped hard boiled eggs, and grated cheddar. You can add homemade chopped bacon as well! Radishes are another colorful and zesty add in.

Of course, homemade ranch is just the thing, but use store bought or whatever ranch you like. This dill ranch dressing recipe below is the one I used. It makes a thicker dressing with the traditional ranch flavor. I like it because it is easy to adjust and works well with sour cream instead of mayonnaise as noted below.

I love all your beautiful plates and serving pieces. You really know how to entertain elegantly.

I love homemade Ranch made with lots of herbs instead of the packets. I’ve made my own homemade ranch mix with all the herbs and buttermilk powder. The downside is that it got all lumpy in the canister despite being air tight.

I love Outback Steakhouse’s ranch which is made in restaurant (at least it was several years ago). They add some cayenne pepper and lots of fresh cracked black pepper. So I always add these to my ranch.

I have also made ranch dressing and dip with fresh herbs. It’s amazing. You do have to use less fresh herbs than dried because fresh are a lot more flavorful.

As much as I love ranch it’s not a good thing to eat everyday especially in large servings. So I started making dip and dressing with plain Greek yogurt. I usually use the individual cups because the large ones are a lot to eat for one person before it spoils. Savory yogurt is really delicious, and I can drown my vegetables in ranch knowing it’s good for me. If I can get it, milk kefir has more probiotics so I add some to the yogurt dip and will add more to make the dip thinner to use as dressing. A little mayo and buttermilk will make the dressing more like regular ranch dressing so sometimes I do that.
