My January Books Selections 2022

January is a gift. It is a gift optimism and hope. Every year the slate is wiped clean and a new beginning is presented to us on the Eve of the New Year. The quiet heart of winter often celebrates this annual renewal by blanketing the landscape in pure white. In a moment of reflection, the snowy surroundings fill me with a sense of newness that feels spiritually cleansing. There is a new energy and willingness to take on the world. Of course, I want to read inspirational books as well to celebrate this. So, while my January books selections 2022 are just two I am confident that they will be very encouraging reads to kick off this burst of enthusiasm.

Each day presents us with choices. These choices look different for all of us. The choice to rise above the current times is one that weighs heavy daily for many. So many people have such short fuses right now. As frustrating as things can be it won’t help to join in the fuss, so how can we treat people better? How can we choose to be better than this? The book selections both deal with choices to live kindly and better. Rather than dwelling on the negative to see the positive. Periodic reminders of these things are important to keeping us on track and not letting the bad stuff pull us under.

The first title is “A Year of Living Kindly” by Donna Cameron which grabbed my attention instantly. Now more than ever being kind is important as poor tempers and just plain meanness are witnessed daily. Donna Cameron commits to 365 days of practicing kindness and presents us with the results in a myriad of stories. We can never read enough stories on kindness. Or better yet, practice enough kindness.

The second book has been on my kindle for a while now called “The Choice” by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, one of the few remaining Holocaust survivors who stills lives today. Dr. Eger puts her tragedy and journey to healing on paper. At its heart is her struggle to forgive herself for surviving. She comes to realize we all have a choice. We can focus on what we’ve lost or focus on what we have. In the current state of affairs, I was eager to see the perspective of someone who truly has seen terrible times and draw on her wisdom.
