November Book Picks 2022

Reading is dreaming with open eyes.

November Book Picks 2022. November 1, 2022.

Summer left as quickly as it came, and the rains set in as comfortably as ever. My stack of books is growing as I look for new titles to spend my rainy evenings tucked under the covers with before reposing for the night. Having finished this month’s book pick I am now reading the Mysteries of Udolpho, a gothic romance/thriller written in 1794 by Anne Radcliffe. Brideshead Revisited has been added to the pile. It has been a while since I have read anything by Evelyn Waugh and this title offered a Downton Abbey sort of story with strong spiritual themes that appealed. In another life I should have been a librarian or literature professor, but in the here and now my love of reading is more than simple entertainment. Reading is the foundation of good writing.

As my writing professors have all said, if you want to write than read- a lot. There is no pun intended when I say they are right. Reading really does train the brain to put words to paper. It can be easy to focus on the formal training of writing and forget the most important task of being a good reader. Reading is the muse that builds the ideas and inspires the words. And lighthearted reads such as this month’s book picks are no less worthy of inspiring that the loftiest, thickest book. And so, I will keep adding books to my pile for as long as I am on this earth.

Looking through the “best of” lists two books came up a few times, both promising looking. They are now in the November rotation and my official book picks for this month.

Black Sheep by Georgette Heyer. I am a confirmed Georgette Heyer fan. Her delightfully spirited Regency books are just the thing for Jane Austen fans looking to quench the thirst for more. Abigail and her niece, Fanny, are proper women who come up against two society rakes, an uncle and his nephew. Abigail is trying to prevent her niece from running off with the nephew as well as fighting her own attraction to the uncle. Georgette Heyer never fails to entertain.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson. Published in 1938, this fun-looking book was described as a Cinderella story. Our heroine is a middle-aged, impoverished governess accidentally winds up at the home of a nightclub singer where her world is turned upside down and transformed. Reviews of this book are wonderful, and I am looking forward to reading this sweet little find!
