October Book Picks 2021
The days are growing darker and shorter while cooler air drifts in. This morning I looked out to a foggy gorge and knew fall was officially here. Fall evenings have a bit of a spooky ambiance which always means mystery books. While I have read plenty of modern mysteries my favorites are much earlier in the genre. One of my all-time favorite books is “The Woman in White” by Wilkie Collins and makes most best read lists for Victorian books. It is a mystery as well as a page turner. But for this month an old favorite is being pulled out: Miss Silver. If you are a fan of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple books, then you will love Patricia Wentworth’s delightfully old fashioned Miss Silver books for October book picks 2021.
Though contemporaries, Wentworth was first published before Christie and the beginning of the Miss Silver books actually predates the first Miss Marple books by 2 years. It may be that the first inspired the latter, but we don’t know. But Miss Silver doesn’t disappoint in these cozy mysteries with their elderly spinster governess enjoying a second career as an unofficial detective and heroine. Faded Page is a wonderful free online resource with no signups, pop ups, etc. that provides many of these old books included the Miss Silver series. Below is a link to this page, so you can enjoy them as well. The two books pictured were my choices for this month although there easily could be more. What a perfect title for the season: “The Clock Strikes Twelve”. Time to snuggle up with a book, blanket, and tea! Happy October!
