Sea Glass Cocktail

Beach themes are so soothing, and nothing puts me more in the mood for the beach than the arrival of Summer. Just thinking about the breezy, coastal air, warm sand between my toes, and the crashing waves relaxes me. The beach is a two-hour drive from our home which limits how much time we spend there. However, one of the perks of home decor is that even if you don’t live on the beach you can enjoy it in your home with a few well-chosen pieces. This helps to create the mood and enjoy a relaxing, “ocean-like” atmosphere. It also helps to bring touches of the ocean in the little things such as cocktails, so I created this beachy, Sea Glass cocktail to share with you today.

If you shop at my store then chances are you’ve seen or tried the Seascape products at SomeTyme Place. Within the next couple weeks this summer’s sea-themed products will be listed, so stayed tuned. In the meantime, to keep the ocean theme going I came up with a Sea Glass cocktail. I wanted it to be the color of sea glass, and I wanted it to remind me of the ocean with a light and breezy taste. The result is a drink that is pale aqua which is reminiscent of sea glass and is tropical as well as breezy.

The aqua color comes from a French tropical fruit liqueur called Hpnotiq which is perfect for this cocktail. I spotted Hpnotiq in the liquor store one day and knew I had to try it. The tempting allure of the blue liqueur and pretty bottle was calling my name. Hpnotiq has a sweet tropical flavor and is a blend of several exotic fruits. It is a great addition to the liquor cabinet because it’s so versatile and pretty. Coconut rum is another good liquor cabinet staple and boosts the tropical flavor of this drink. So, to round out the Hpnotiq and give it some beachy character I added some coconut rum.

But how to make this drink ocean-like and breezy? For this I turned to a favorite trick of mine- spearmint. Bruised spearmint is perfect for giving the drink a fresh and breezy taste without it tasting minty like a candy cane. Before putting the spearmint into the drink, I rubbed about 3 leaves of it between my fingers and “bruise” it which allows the essential oils to come out and flavor the drink lightly. Don’t confuse peppermint with spearmint or your drink might not taste very good- bleah!

Finally, to top it all off, I added club soda for crispness. Club soda is a favorite of mine because it keeps drinks from being too sweet plus I love its bubbly character. I’ve tried seltzer waters, sparkling waters, etc. but club soda has the best fizz factor and lasts the longest. Club soda also helps dilute the liqueur into a pretty, pale sea glass color. It makes this drink very refreshing, especially for a hot day.

The Sea Glass Cocktail is refreshing, tropical, and perfect. It is also pretty to serve, so pin it to your board for your next summer gathering.
