Strawberry Mint Julep
My herb garden is my place of joy. I love watching them grow and bloom with all their different and delicious smells. And of course, every effort possible is made to use the fresh herbs in cooking, baking, etc. while we have them. Later in the season when the herbs are at their best, I will dry them, but that is another post. Today’s post uses mint which is cooling and perfect for a mint julep. Mint juleps are a muddled cocktail that are perfect for a hot day with their frosty glasses and cool nature. For variety though, strawberries are added to this version since strawberry season is coming quickly. Oregon is known for their sweet strawberries, so I had to include them as well! Today’s Strawberry Mint Julep is lovely for sipping on a warm or hot afternoon while sitting in the sun.
This version uses gin although you can use bourbon- it’s a preference thing. Keep reading below for the recipe!
Strawberry Mint Julep
Note: Lots of crushed ice is essential to this drink to give it the frosty glass. If you don’t have it just crush regular ice cubes in a plastic bag with a mallet.
Makes 1 julep. Double, triple as needed.
2 smashed up strawberries
1 tbsp. simple syrup (see below)
2 oz. gin
Several mint leaves (I like a lot of mint)
Crushed ice
Optional: club soda. If you find the gin too strong try cutting it with club soda although I find the crushed ice does cut the drink a good bit. Try experimenting.
To make simple syrup: combine equal parts sugar and water. Heat until sugar is dissolved. Keep extra in fridge for up to several months.
Muddle mint leaves and smashed strawberries in the bottom of a glass. Add simple syrup. Next, fill glass completely with crushed ice. And finally, top this off with 2 oz. of gin. The sides of the glass should get nice and frosty! Stir to combine and enjoy!
Enjoy your Strawberry Mint Julep!
