The Essential Christmas Wreath

It’s December and the Christmas decor is slowly coming out of our garage. Usually, we would have our tree up by now; however, our two small nephews are arriving from Germany on Christmas Day. This means if we get a tree now it will be crispy by the time they arrive. We’ve decided to wait until the middle of the month to get a tree so it’s fresher. In the meantime, there are plenty of other things to put up. One of my favorite Christmas decor items is the wreath. Somehow, it seems to exude a welcoming Christmas spirit, so plenty of different wreaths go up around the house because variety is important. I even put a small wreath on the outside of each window on our top floor. There is one essential Christmas wreath I always keep in my decorator’s arsenal, however, and that is a boxwood wreath.

Why is a boxwood wreath the essential Christmas wreath? Because it can be used it ALL year long. Many wreaths use fir tree which looks out of place in the non-Christmas season. Boxwood, however, does not because it works any season. A boxwood wreath is one of those great investment decor pieces because it is gorgeous plain, but it can easily be dressed up no matter what the occasion. For example, for Christmas I stuck some faux berries throughout the wreath and then clipped on one of the gorgeous poinsettias from Pier 1. By the way, I scored those beautiful clip-on poinsettias for only  $2.50 each on Black Friday- woo hoo! I bought them in Christmas red and champagne. They are really high quality and VERY versatile just like the boxwood wreath.

Back to the wreath, boxwood wreaths are easy to decorate. There is no need to ruin it with glue. Simply use pieces with clips and picks. Try using oranges or other fruit or just a simple long and elegant bow. Seriously, endless options: put lights in it, ornaments, pinecones, etc. Get a few and put them throughout the house. They also come in small versions as well. Tiny ones would be wonderful as chair decor for your Christmas table.

And here is another idea for decorating your boxwood wreath using an asymmetrical grouping of berries with a red velvet bow and clip-on cardinal.

My genuine boxwood wreath came from Target at a bargain price of $44! It’s a staple item they carry is usually available. Most genuine boxwood wreaths I’ve seen run around $100, and many faux wreaths run around $30-40, so it’s a no brainer. This is a high-quality boxwood wreath that I love. In fact, I’ve had it a couple of years now and it still looks amazing. Currently, I have the wreath hanging above the bay window where I’ve put our next Black Friday purchases: the 2 furry papasan from pier 1. On a side note, the complete chair was only $99 each and the fur feels so luxurious to sink into. When we get our tree the sitting area and wreath will be moved elsewhere, but for now we are enjoying a simple and festive conversation area.

Merry Christmas season to you! Hope your week is filled with joy!
