Welcome October

My favorite month of the year has arrived! This is when our PNW trees are most brilliant with golds and reds. Fall is so beautiful it would seem wrong not to decorate the home to celebrate the season. Over the years I’ve tended to stay traditional with orange pumpkins and the usual yellow, red, and orange color motif. The last couple of years, however, I’ve ditched the orange, brown, yellow, and red in exchange for a cooler palette of blue-green, dark green, eucalyptus, crimson, and white. The color change has been refreshing! It’s still a classic, yet updated look that is universally appealing. Today I wanted to share with you these ideas for fall decorating outside.

Heirloom pumpkins such as white Ghost and blue Jarrahdale pair well with colors such as crimson, dark green, and eucalyptus. The muted blue-green color of the Jarrahdale pumpkins is so sophisticated and pretty. This brings me to the other reason I like these pumpkins so much: they work better with the color scheme in our mountain home. We have dark green fixtures in our home, so I chose a color palette from one of my favorite color resources, Design Seeds. The palette I chose contains light blue-green, dark green, crimson, pale pink, and cream. Design Seeds is a great resource is you are needing color inspiration for anything. They have the most amazing selection of palettes to choose from and it’s free!

Changing up my pumpkin choices made it easy to incorporate the new autumn color scheme. The Jarrahdale pumpkins work perfectly in the chosen color scheme. However, this year finding a grower of blue pumpkins has been difficult, so I am falling back on white pumpkins and various green gourds. It’s still early so maybe some Jarrahdales will pop up?

White Ghost pumpkins are more widely available around here, so I got plenty of those in different sizes. Gourds aren’t short in supply either and come in many unique shades of green, yellow, white, and orange. It was no problem finding dark and light green gourds to pair with the white pumpkins. They look great together! Behind the pumpkins are tall sheaths of corn stalks on either side of the door which add more harvest appeal. The Dark red mums and crimson autumn leaves along with a basket of red apples give the display nice pops of color. A lantern with a candle and some autumn leaves inside made the look homey.

On the door I put a fall wreath in similar colors. Pre-decorated wreaths are lovely and widely available, but I wanted to make my own to go with the chosen palette. The local grocery had cinnamon-scented twig wreaths which I used as the base for the door wreath and they smell good. I filled the wreath in with faux flowers and leaf stems I bought at Pier 1 Imports. Only a few stems were necessary because I cut them up before arranging them on the wreath. The stems provided more than enough flowers to fill the wreath and create another display in the house. Dark green eucalyptus leaves sit on the other side.

Next week I will share how I continued the color scheme inside the house. What are your favorite colors to use in Fall decorating?

Happy Fall decorating! Have a wonderful week!
