Our Family's Magic Cookie Bars

These are a beefed up version of the original we are all so familiar with. Butterscotch chips are added and everything else is doubled. These are always requested at Christmas!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups graham cracker crumbs *option for thinner crust at the bottom in notes
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 1.5 cups chocolate chips
  • 1.5 cups butterscotch chips
  • 3.5 cups sweetened, flaked coconut
  • 2 14 oz cans of sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

  • Melt the butter.
  • Combine graham cracker crumbs and sugar in large bowl.
  • Stir melted butter into graham cracker crumbs.
  • Press mixture very firmly into a 13 x 9 inch pan that has been lined with foil and greased.
  • Evenly pour 1 can of sweetened condensed milk on top of prepared crust.
  • Evenly spread the coconut on top of the milk layer.
  • Sprinkle chocolate chips and butterscotch chips on top of this.
  • Pour remaining can of sweetened condensed milk over the chips.
  • Press down firmly on magic bars.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until the crust is browning around the edges.
  • See tips below for cutting.

Notes

  • These bars are rather messy with graham cracker crumbs, melted chocolate, condensed milk, etc., so I recommend waiting until the bars cooled completely down to cut.
  • These freeze well.
  • I usually get 40 bars from this, but it will depend upon the size you cut. I cut 5 rows by 8 rows in my pan for 40 total.
  • Don't want a thick crust? Try 2 cups graham cracker crumbs, 3/4 cup melted butter and 3 tbsps. sugar.
