Victorian Hot Spiced Wine

This centuries old Christmas classic has remained a favorite throughout the world with a number of variations. This version comes from Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management.

Ingredients

  • 1 pint red wine
  • sugar
  • cinnamon sticks
  • whole cloves
  • nutmeg
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  • Pour wine into a pot and add water.
  • Add sugar and spices to suit. Amount of sugar will depend on personal taste and wine (see notes below).
  • Simmer ingredients until wine is hot and infused. Don't boil.

Notes

  • If I know I am going to make mulled wine in advance, I will buy the inexpensive, sweet red wine at the store, which needs less sugar.
  • If I have an orange, I will slice it up and add it in (German way).
  • The spices are a suggestion. Add other spices you wish.
  • Double or triple as desired.
  • One regular bottle of wine is approximately 3 generous cups.
