Victorian Hot Spiced Wine
This centuries old Christmas classic has remained a favorite throughout the world with a number of variations. This version comes from Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management.

Ingredients

pint
red wine
sugar
cinnamon sticks
whole cloves
nutmeg
1
cup
water
Instructions
Pour wine into a pot and add water.
Add sugar and spices to suit. Amount of sugar will depend on personal taste and wine (see notes below).
Simmer ingredients until wine is hot and infused. Don't boil.
Notes
If I know I am going to make mulled wine in advance, I will buy the inexpensive, sweet red wine at the store, which needs less sugar.
If I have an orange, I will slice it up and add it in (German way).
The spices are a suggestion. Add other spices you wish.
Double or triple as desired.
One regular bottle of wine is approximately 3 generous cups.
