Autumnal Dried Flower Arrangement
“I was drinking in the surroundings: air so crisp you could snap it with your fingers and greens in every lush shade imaginable offset by autumnal flashes of red and yellow.” – Wendy Delsol, Stork
Autumnal Dried Flower Arrangement. Sept. 27, 2022.
As if one cue the dog days of August gave way to the crispness of September. The world always knows just when to do so without needing a calendar reminder. Crispness is everywhere from the morning air to gloomy dusk to the leaves clinging to trees by a thread that threatens to snap at a mere breath. The world is moving to a state of preservation, holding all its beauty in one final dignified display before giving way to the winds and winter.
There are so many things I want to capture and hold onto in this season. The large, vermillion rosehips still clinging to the rose bush beg to be paired with Japanese maple leaves and become an arrangement on our table. Blueberry bush leaves are a kaleidoscope of primary colors and I clip a few of those for a sideboard table. Everywhere around is an inspiration for home decor. Less and less am I relying on the store bought faux and learning more and more to bring the outdoors in. After drying dozens of mature colored hydrangeas, I began creating an Autumnal Dried Flower Arrangement. Then I created more.
I want to carry some of the Autumn with me into the dark winter days; to cling to it like the leaves in their last days on the tree that has been their vassal for three seasons. Hydrangeas are the best flowers to preserve in the fall. They are the most colorful and reliable. Many rainbow hues sat in buckets drying and now wait to be used. Wanting to expand on dried flowers in decor an idea for an arrangement has been brewing in my head using dried eucalyptus and roses. The hydrangeas will look just right with them. The autumnal dried flower arrangement is better than I hoped for. It turns out so well that I am inspired to create several more.
Carefully, I place the dried flowers in their holders and equally as carefully arrange them. Their crispness results in lost petals and flowers, but most stay in tact. Antique style gold vases and urns make perfect receptacles for the dignified bouquet. It is almost as if the vases were open casket coffins for beautiful, elderly individuals that we are paying last respects to. A beautiful tribute for a life well-lived in the final stretch of the year. They show us the beauty that lies even at the end.
