Birthday Cake Scones

I am still trying to figure out how I feel about turning 48. Actually, 48 is more ominous sounding than 47 because the 8 looks more like a 0 which makes me think of 50. Lol! My feelings on middle-aged are mixed right now, but mostly because of how fast time has flown. Our kids are young adults. Our son has started his post-college career a few months ago and came home recently to visit for a few days, so we got to see him work in his professional capacity which is currently remote. It was all surreal. How did we arrive at this point so fast???? How am I now 48???

Yes, this is a different stage of life, but it is also one of new beginnings as I continue to carve a new identity for myself outside of motherhood. And it is sweet to get birthday love from adult kids. Since they were both home, they surprised me with an early birthday present and made me homemade pink macaroons. And knowing how much I LOVE slippers, they also gifted me with fluffy pink and white slippers. My heart was very full! And when my actual birthday comes on Tuesday, I will celebrate with my husband once again. I will also celebrate the grace of womanhood and motherhood and middle agedness. And I will start the day off with these delicious Birthday Cake Scones!

This recipe is another delicious variation of this basic cream scone recipe here. I adore sprinkles, so of course I had to incorporate them in the recipes. Additionally, almond and vanilla extracts give the dough a yummy birthday cake taste while the sprinkles add a festive touch. These Birthday Cake Scones are celebratory and should be enjoyed as such! Easy to make, easy to share, easy to impress, and easy to make someone (or yourself) feel special!

Scones

1 recipe of scone dough (here) and add to this 2 tsps. of vanilla extract, 1 tsp. of almond extract, and 1/4 cup of sprinkles. Continue to follow instructions for baking basic scones (omitting sparkling sugar) and top with icing recipe below.

Icing

2.5 cups of powdered sugar

2 tbsps. of melted butter

1 tsp. of vanilla extract

1 tsp. of almond extract

Sprinkles

Combine powdered sugar, melted butter, and both extract until you have a smooth and pourable icing (icing should be a bit thick to avoid too much runoff). Pour onto cooled scones and top with sprinkles right away. Birthday Cake Scones are ready to eat!
