Books on my Nightstand August 2023
Books on my Nightstand August 2023, August 1, 2023. The month escaped me fast and before I knew it August had replaced July on the calendar. Soon, summer will be peaking before its decent into autumn. Each season is gone in the blink of an eye- a reminder to enjoy the small moments of everyday life before they fade into the background of memory. This month I am looking forward to reading the two charming-looking books I’ve picked for August. Both books are by authors I have previously read and enjoyed. And one book was even turned into a movie.

The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge. A few months ago, I read Goudge’s Eliot Family trilogy and enjoyed her complex characters and beautiful writing very much. She had written many books, so I knew I would read her again. This time I picked up The Little White Horse. I have seen the movie based on this book but didn’t realize it was one of Goudge’s works at the time. It is the story of a young orphan who goes to live with her uncle at Moonacre Manor. She loves her life there, but senses something is wrong beneath the surface of the Manor and the surrounding town. So, she sets about to discover its mystery and right the situation. The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. Kate Morton is a modern writer that I first read earlier this year as well with plans to read more by her. She has an appealing classic style to her writing and gothic style plots that are engaging. In The Forgotten Garden we read about a young girl who shows up in Australia all alone except for a book of fairy tales she carries with her. She is taken in and raised by the dockmaster and his wife. Later she learns the truth of her background and travels back to England to find out who she really is. Her quest takes her to Blackhurst Manor where she learns about her doomed family. However, it is her granddaughter who finishes the search years later when she discovers the book of fairy tales and the secrets it holds for the family. Click here to read this book free.
