Vintage Reads for November 2021

This month’s book picks are vintage reads from the 19th century. They are mostly inspirational; however, the exception is Lady Audley’s Secret which is sensational novel. Two of them are new to me. The other two are old favorites that seemed appropriate for November. Vintage books hold a special charm for its devoted readers. They allow us to escape to a different time and enjoy dramatic plots, fussy, glamorous clothes, and heroines over the light of a candle on a cold, dark fall night. When I go antique shopping the vintage book section is one of my first stops. My fingers trace over the colorful bindings, occasionally opening one who’s title is especially alluring. And while fun to collect, keep in mind many vintage books are free to read online. And with that here are my vintage reads for November 2021.

Lady Audley’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Bigamy, murder, arson, and more play into this juicy page turner. Lady Audley is the picture of perfection as the new wife of an older, wealthy widower. Her husband’s nephew, Robert, comes to visit. While there he tells them he wants to introduce a friend to them as well as show him their home. However, before the introduction can take place his friend suddenly goes missing. Suspicious incidents begin to stack up and Robert must face the facts that Lady Audley is at the center of these mysterious doings.

The Lamplighter by Maria Susanna Cummins. This is a Victorian sentimental novel and was an immediate best seller. Sentimental novels are written to move their readers and stir emotions, often using exaggerated and unrealistic storylines. However, that is no reason not to enjoy them! The plot follows the hard life of Gertrude, an orphan, and her journey out of poverty and abuse to become a strong and faith-filled woman. We travel with Gertrude over the course of her life with its ups and downs as she strives to become the woman she desires to be.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Okay, this is hardly a new read for me, but something about Thanksgiving month inspired me to pull out this feel-good novel about four young women in this classic American novel.

Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery. If you are unfamiliar with this title it is the cousin to Anne of Green Gables. Montgomery wrote a shorter Emily series about another orphan girl who goes to live with cold and austere relatives and dreams of being a poet. Her 3 childhood friends Teddy, Else, and Perry support her as they make their way into young adulthood, each pursuing dreams.
