Books on my Nightstand June 2023. June 1, 2023.

There is a corner of my personal library that holds some well-worn books by Janette Oke. I first read her Love Comes Softly series in high school and fell in love with Marty and Clark and the pioneer era. Oke writes with a gentle, yet steady hand crafting stories that portray the hardships of pioneer life and yet the inner strength derived from faith that kept them going and strong. Her books were not sensationalist or turbulent but were very soothing to my young teenage soul.

Oke is a popular author who has written many books since then. Many of her books have been turned into tv series as well including this month’s book picks. So, given my love of her “Love Comes Softly” series I am at a loss at to why I’ve never read her other books. This month that is going to change with the addition of her latest trilogy to my library, “When Hope Calls” series.

This trilogy was co-written with her daughter and covers the adventures of two sisters in the early 1900s in Brookfield, Canada who find each other after being separated early in life and go on to run a children’s home together.

  1. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your reading selections every month! I have not read this trilogy, but I do have the utmost confidence in your literary recommendations, as I’ve loved every book you’ve ever suggested. I’m just finishing Elizabeth Goudge’s ‘The Eliot Family Trilogy’, and it’s tempting to just start rereading them immediately! Her characters are so wonderfully complex (both human and non-human, ie Damerosehay and The Herb of Grace!), that I’ve probably only absorbed a pittance of what those pages hold. So thank you, dear Friend, for bringing so much joy into my reading hours.
