June Book Pick

June book pick

This month finds me a little behind on my reading schedule. Unrepentantly, I took a long detour from my books picks list to enjoy the Anne of Green Gables series. Additionally, I slipped in an extra book picked up on the spur of the moment for kindle. Since I was quickly falling behind only one book was selected for June while I finish May book picks and perhaps squeeze in a few more LM Montgomery books. For the June book pick I selected a thick, adult fairy tale novel by John Crowley called “Little, Big” but is also known as “The Fairies Parliament”.

June Book Pick: “Little, Big”

Little, Big is a meeting of the world of Faery and reality. One thing I noticed when reading about this book is that people either really like it or really don’t. This adds to the appeal for me as I find it curious a book that would produce such opposite reactions. One thing people did agree on is that John Crowley is a talented writer with beautiful language skills. This was a huge bonus for me.

In this multigenerational book we read about the Drinkwater family and their interactions with the realm of faery. The original patriarch of the family, John Drinkwater suspects the existence of the world of faery, but cannot see them. However, his wife can see and speak with them. John designs and builds a house that becomes a sort of portal to the world of Faery. Over the years some of the family members can see the fairies and others can’t. I admit the whole plot sounded abstract, intriguing, mystical, yet intelligent. Now to finish up my other book and get started….
