Golden Framed Ornaments

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

The golden touches we love in the home draw the mind to an older time with sprawling manors, rich kingly courts, and heavenly things. Gold’s warm glow was harnessed by the human imagination from the beginning and has been used to craft many beautiful things since. Of course, possession of it in great quantities was not common due to its value, so a manor full of golden decor spoke of one’s level of wealth and refinement. Most of us are familiar with the gold leafing of furniture, gilding, mirrors, etc, that were a hallmark of the splendor of the Baroque and Regency periods. They were eras that never truly left us, and their style continues to this day, where it has found its way into homes throughout the world. Albeit much of it is faux gold, we are happy to have the imposter to make our own homes elegant.

Golden Framed Ornaments

I plead guilty to using fraudulent gold in my own decor with ornate gold painted frames and mirrors, but I have no regrets about it. Gold adds a heavenly aura to the surroundings, and for a moment, the gap between earth and the divine doesn’t seem quite so wide. However, I am too much of a romantic to give much thought to gold’s value; it would seem vulgar. But its presence does send my imagination upward, as I imagined it did for the Israelites when they built their own temple under God’s own instructions- and there was plenty of gold in its making. Even God’s own heavenly kingdom is a golden one, as His word tells us in Revelations:

…and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.

Mini Baroque Frame Ornaments

Many years ago, precious gold was brought to an unknown babe born in a manger whose birthday we now celebrate for the salvation it brought to us sinful humans. The gold in Christmas is a reminder of the kingly gift that three watchful wisemen brought to a stable, the most unexpected of all places for the divine, but they knew He would be there. The Son of God had come down to us, lowly humans. That we should be so loved is truly amazing!

Golden Framed Ornaments

Yes, gold is very much present in our home at Christmas, which we celebrate joyfully. For a few years, I have been looking for just the right golden frames for this particular ornament project. I finally found them at a great price. These miniature golden baroque frames would be just right with images of old nativity paintings. Old flower art would also be lovely in these for a floral-themed tree. They are sold out where I bought them, but these here are very similar.

A quick project for the Christmas tree for those who love a bit of Baroque style! These are heavier ornaments and work best on trees with sturdier branches such as nobles or faux trees
Print Recipe

Ingredients

  • Mini Baroque gold frames
  • Pictures to fit
  • Cardstock
  • Thin ribbon
  • Tape
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors

Instructions

  • Find art you like.
  • Copy and paste images onto a blank document resizing as needed to fit the frame. This may take a couple trys to get it right. Measure the inside of the frame where the picture goes and adust your image to be a bit bigger (not much). Round frames will need to be configured with a bigger image.
  • Print out images on cardstock.
  • Cut out images to fit frame leaving room for tape and glue.
  • Cut lengths of ribbons the size you want. I don't recommend making these too long as the ornament is heavy.
  • Tape the image on the sides of the back of the frame as shown in the photo.
  • Glue one side of the ribbon on the top of the frame as shown.
  • Glue the other side of the ribbon on top and press down. Be careful of the hot glue!
  • Let the ornament cool a few mintues.
  • Enjoy ornaments!

Notes

Tips:
  • To save on ink when configuring image sizes, print a copy in black and white draft mode on plain copy paper.
  • Don’t make ribbon hangers too long, as these are heavier ornaments.
  • If you want to coat the image with something, I personally like to spray Mod Podge in gloss. I find brushing on Mod Podge tends to slightly blur the ink.
  • This works with vellum paper too, and allows light to shine through!
