While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads”

Sugar Plum Oatmeal Jam Bars. November 2025.

The Sugar Plum fairy tiptoes across the stage every Christmas to beckon in the holiday magic, all while dancing to the tinkling notes of the orchestra. She never fails to enchant us and continues to dance in our Christmas dreams, bringing the sparkle and joy we love so much. Christmas may be red and green, but we always make room for a bit of pink and purple when it comes to the Sugar Plum fairy. So, when I saw this jar of sugar plum preserves, of course, I was drawn to use it for the classic oatmeal jam bar cookies that go on our cookie platter every Christmas at Hidden Bluff.

Plum jam is superb! Especially when it is homemade. I have made it with the small Italian plums before, and it was the best jam I have ever had! There is no homemade plum jam in my pantry these days as I am waiting for my plum tree to grow big. However, this sugar plum jam is more than an acceptable substitute. It’s plum jam with Christmas spirit! Holiday spices are infused with plums for this festive jam. It pairs well with this classic oatmeal jam bar cookie recipe that has been around for decades (Original recipe here). Other jams or preserves are wonderful as well in this cookie. Some favorites include raspberry, cherry, and blueberry. Keep reading for the recipe.

A holiday twist on the classic oatmeal bar! I doubled this recipe to fit a 13 x 9-inch pan for thicker bars and more of them. Just bake a few minutes longer if needed.
