Making Pumpkin Candlelights

Making Pumpkin Candlelights, October 16; 2023. We held our annual autumn charcuterie last weekend. The house quickly filled, and people loved the big charcuterie spread put out. My daughter and niece were a big help in assembling the whole board, and we pulled it off without a hitch. People munched and milled about the room, talking away. There was lots of laughing, and hopefully, people were able to set their cares aside for awhile.

Mossy cottage was the theme I was heading for and decorated accordingly with faux mossy-looking garlands, wood dishes, acorns, and mini white pumpkins. The white pumpkins became candlelights for the romantic autumn touch, and they aren’t hard to do. Turning pumpkins into candlelights does require a careful hand for a good look, so don’t rush. You can use this tutorial for big pumpkins too! I turned our sage-colored jarrahdale pumpkins out front into giant pumpkin candlelights for a spooky ambiance. These are lovely for a low profile Thanksgiving table as well, so tuck this idea away for next month!

Making Pumpkin Candlelights

Turn your mini pumpkins (or big pumpkins) into tea light holders for an elegant and moody autumn ambiance with this easy tutorial.

Ingredients

  • pumpkins
  • pen
  • small knife (I used a paring knife)
  • tea lights with metal holders

Instructions

  • Take one pumpkin and remove stem. This is easy with small pumpkins. With big pumpkins you may need more force).
  • Take one tea light and remove the candle from its tin holder.
  • Take the candle and center it over where the pumpkin stem used to be.
  • Trace around the candle with a pen.
  • Using a small knife carefully cut all around the circle you traced. You want to cut around the circle as if you are going to pull it out, but wait- don’t pull it out.
  • Instead, push the circle down enough to create a platform for your tea light to sit on.
  • Put the candle back in its metal container and push into the hole you have created.
  • They are now ready to use!

Notes

Tips for success:
  • use a soft scrub or baking soda to remove any pen marks if needed.
  • little pumpkins will last around a week before getting soft, so make these a day or two before you plan on using them.
