October Book Picks

My favorite month is here! October is such a colorful and vibrant month filled with natural ambiance to create the mood. Crisp autumn leaves, spiderwebs, and darker days all make it the perfect time for spooky, mystery, thriller-type reads. In my humble opinion, The Victorians knew how to do spooky the best with classics such as Dracula, The Tell-tale Heart, and the Woman in White. However, reading new things is the goal because it opens up the mind and helps the brain to grow. So, I have picked out a few to dive into (and probably a few more as well). So, today I am sharing my October book picks.

This month there are two traditional mysteries with your typical detective and village along with one spooky, and one historical thriller. Amazon Kindle has been a great way to find new authors and great deals on books. Additionally, they have options for early release orders which is fun to take advantage of if there is a particular title I want to read. This is the first time I have read any of these authors. Maybe you are the same, but sometimes I find an author and stay in that track. That’s not a bad thing but getting out of the rut is good as well. And here are the October book picks:

October Books Picks

Still Life by Louise Penny Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is the starring detective in this French-Canadian genre. This is the first book of the series with the disturbing death of an elderly village woman by bow and arrow. What was considered a hunting accident turns to murder after village secrets start emerging. But it is not just a murder the Inspector has to tend to, but a difficult new detective making trouble.

Craven Manor by Darcy Coates. Daniel is formerly homeless and try to find his way back with the help of his cousin. After months of looking for work he is offered a good job as the caretaker of an old property a few miles out of town. The new employer communicates only by note and has some strange rules that raise questions for the desperate Daniel.

Dreamland by Nancy Bilyeau. This historical thriller is set near turn of the century Coney Island. An independent heiress, Peggy Batternberg is forced to spend her summer near Coney Island, but finds it a welcome refuge from her controlling family. However, trouble and bodies start turning up putting obstacles in the way of her freedom. How far will her family go to prevent her from living the life she wants?

In the Woods by Tana French. Twenty years earlier a shocked 12-year-old Rob Ryan is found in blood-soaked shoes after disappearing with several children. He is the only one who is found and has no memory of it. The case comes back to haunt him when the murder of another child takes place. The similarities between this case and his own are great. This may be a chance to solve his own mystery.
