The Story of My Blue and White Pitcher
The story of my blue and white pitcher begins a long time ago when we bought our first house. Blue and white kitchens are a special love for me with their classic look, and so that is how I decorated our first tiny kitchen. There is something crisp and clean about blue and white, especially in a kitchen. The next house had green kitchen fixtures, so no blue and white chinoiserie there. But now at Hidden Blue we are back to having a blue and white kitchen. Actually, the kitchen is blue and pine, and I am adding the white. Of course, this means lots of chinoiserie! But the first item I bought for Hidden Bluff was this English blue and white pitcher bowl set. I bought it even before we bought the house. It was a purchase of faith for a house I didn’t know would be ours.
Hidden bluff is an unpretentious mid-century home tucked away at the end of a cul-de-sac. My husband stumbled onto it in the middle of a very hot real estate market. It is actually amazing that we got it. Everyone from the realtor to the lender said so. The house offered so much including multigenerational living for such an awesome price. This house literally checked every single box we had for our “grown up” house. Offices for both my husband and I, 6 bedrooms total, 4000 sq ft, easy care yard, workshop for me, an ADA set up apartment for elderly parents when needed, etc. Our checklist was pretty long, but it needed to be for this stage of life. We have a lot of things on our plate and needed to consider our needs and future needs. This meant our next home needed to be a very intentional decision.
Hidden bluff is not actually a home we would normally gravitate towards. In fact, it was a little surprising that my husband even suggested it because midcentury isn’t typically our thing. However, I went along with it because by this time I had learned not to judge a house by its exterior. When we first walked into Hidden Bluff we had an aha moment. In 5 min we realized this house had everything on the list. But most importantly, it felt just right. This is big for my husband and me. When it comes to our big decisions if we both don’t feel right, we don’t do it, period. Hidden Bluff felt just right. It was broken in and comfortable. There was plenty of room for our big Asian family get togethers. And I could easily picture casual elegance with a bit of work.
We still had to make the offer and get it accepted which had its own challenges. However, it was later that night during a spontaneous trip to the goodwill that I saw this gorgeous blue and white vintage pitcher set. At that very moment I knew the house was ours. Somehow, I knew that pitcher sitting right out front of the aisle was put there just for me. And it was telling me to have faith because this house will be yours. So, I bought the pitcher set in faith for a house that we didn’t own or know we would own. And just 6 short weeks later we were moving in.
The minute we moved in the blue and white pitcher set came out first thing. It needed to be where I could see it and remember. It was like a memorial to a moment of faith in a Goodwill store. As much as I love decor having meaningful pieces is becoming a bigger part of the overall look for me. Having pieces that tell a story give your decor so much more depth as well as a reflection of your true style. This move has been full of more moments like that which has continually endeared Hidden Bluff to us even more- like the paint for my office. But that is a story for another post….
Have a lovely day!
