What I’m Currently Reading

Recently, I joined Amazon’s First Reads to take advantage of getting an early look new releases as well as special prices on them. The subscription was free, and it was a great addition to my reading resources. Once a month I get to choose one new release kindle version for $1.99. To be clear, this is not for any new release or physical books. Your choice comes from a pre-selected list for kindle. And you don’t have to have a kindle device. There is a kindle app to download that I use on my iPad and phone. One of the further benefits of Amazon first reads is that the other new releases on the list often have low prices as well. It is a wonderful chance to discover new authors to follow and expand reading horizons.

Another great reading resource is our local library’s large eBook selection through Amazon which also helps keeps book costs down. Over the years, I have spent a lot of money on books. However, my personal library is getting rather large for the space we have, so I am trying to be more intentional with book purchases. My new rule is only to buy a physical book if I think it will pass the test of time. By test of time I mean is the book a classic and/or will I read it again. If not, then to the library or kindle app I go.

So, between the library and Amazon First Reads I enjoyed several new books this month. I have listed my top recommended books from this last month’s read.

A Curve in the Road by Julianne MacLean. If you are looking for a book to throw in your weekender bag this is it. This book is a light yet engrossing read. One night Abbie’s life is forever changed when she is hit by a drunk driver. However, the cliché -sounding storyline doesn’t follow how you think it will. I don’t want to say too much because a big plot twist comes right away, giving a bit of mystery to this book. The book focuses on a woman finding her life again after the accident that destroys her family and career as a surgeon; additionally, she sets out to discover the truth behind the tragic accident. I really enjoyed this book and plan to read more by this author.

Digital Minimalism by millennial blogger, Cal Newport. There was a very long wait for this book and when I tried to renew it there were 100 people waiting to check it out. This book covers a subject that is growing as iGen comes into adulthood. Social media, iPhones, etc. have drastically changed not only society’s landscape, but people as well. This new technology has brought a lot of good, but it has also impaired us as well. Just like Catherine Price’s “How to Break up with your iPhone” this book discusses developing a healthy relationship with technology. The difference is that Price focuses more on the 30-day plan while Newport takes a closer look at the effects of technology in the social landscape. He also spends time looking at cases of people who do have a healthy relationship with technology including (surprise) the Amish.

I’m Fine and Neither are You by Camille Pagan. Penelope’s best friend, a famous blogger with a picture-perfect life, suddenly dies. There’s no real mystery here as it comes to light quickly that she had an opioid addiction. However, the shock of her friend’s death and realizing her friend’s life wasn’t as perfect as she thought has Penelope reevaluating her own life. She is unhappy with her current situation and marriage and her friend’s death prompts her to do something about it. This highly enjoyable book is a real story with real people and real problems in modern society. It is well worth the read and may inspire you to live more honestly and intentionally as well.
