Elderflower Spritz Cocktail

Elderflower Spritz Cocktail

When the Elder Tree’s in flower;
When each shady kind of place
By the stream and up the lane,
Shows its mass of creamy lace-
Summer’s really come again!

The dainty, creamy elderflower makes a brief appearance in early summer before giving way to its berries, which are prized for herbal syrup. Both the elderflower and the elderberry have featured prominently in European desserts, drinks, and herbal medicine since ancient times, and their reputation traveled with the early settlers to the New World. Today, we continue to enjoy both elderberry and elderflower, with elderflower’s flavor being a delightful addition to cocktails and spritzes, adding a gentle floral touch.

Elderflower Spritz Cocktail

A popular drink called the Hugo is a spritz cocktail that features elderflower liqueur. It is a light drink, perfect for sipping on a summer evening. However, I am calling it an Elderflower Spritz because it sounds prettier. This cocktail is easy to make. You can even eyeball it. The liqueur is what makes it sweet, so adjust to suit tastes.

There are a number of variations of this cocktail, but my go-to is the one from St. Germain, who is well known for their elderflower liqueur. I did, however, reduce the amount of liqueur as it was too sweet for my tastes. Adjust to suit your tastes.
