March Book Picks 2021

Self Made by A’Lelia Bundles. Since it is women’s history month, I selected this biography that inspired the popular Netflix mini series. I love inspirational entrepreneur books because anyone who has ever been a business owner knows just how involved it is on all levels- and it is a whole lot of work! So, my respect is high for those who work hard for the dream and succeed such as Madam C.J. Walker. Born to formerly enslaved parents, Madam C.J. Walker became the first self-made American woman millionaire. She lost both parents early on and went on to build her beauty empire with the odds greatly stacked against her as an African American woman in post-Civil War America. Her great-great granddaughter is the biographer, so the author has a familial connection as well. I am looking forward to this inspirational read!

House of Mirth by Edith Wharton. At 29, society’s beauty, Lily Bart, is still unmarried. She seems unable to fall in line with the world around her and wants to enjoy it on her own terms. However, she finds herself needing to marry wealth if she is going to continue her lifestyle. Eventually, through a series of poor choices she finds herself penniless and friendless on the outside of society. This classic Edwardian novel is the tragic tale of a woman pursuing pleasure and wealth only to fall victim to society’s unforgiving standards as well as her own shortcomings.

City of Women by David R. Gillham. The women of Berlin must carry on in a city absent of most men who are fighting in the war. Women such as Sigrid Schröder are all doing their part to keep Germany’s spirits strong and the country running. Sigrid thinks she is a good German. That is until she finds an unexpected Jewish lover- the enemy. While her husband is fighting the war, Sigrid reevaluates what she knows as right and wrong. Eventually, she is caught up in an underground movement to transport Jews out of Berlin. One of the reasons I enjoy WW 2 books is the questions regarding humanity we inevitably find ourselves asking.

The Duke & I by Julia Quinn. Given all I am hearing about the Bridgerton Netflix series I decided to get the first book of the series. Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset both defy convention and yet find themselves put together in a fake courtship that will benefit both their individual causes. However, things don’t always go as planned. I am a sucker for regency novels, so I anticipate this one will be fun!

Have a beautiful week!
