Spring Book Picks 2026

Spring Book Picks 2026. May 10, 2026. My fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Duncan, who also ended up being my daughter’s fourth-grade teacher, did a pioneer unit every year of her long tenure. She had pioneer ancestors and so held a special interest in the subject, especially since the end of the Oregon Trail is our neck of the woods. This unit was always exciting for the whole fourth-grade class, with interactive projects that included eating green pumpkin pie and making braided rugs while the teacher read from Little House on the Prairie. There was a final Pioneer Day when the kids all dressed up like pioneers. It was extra special to watch my daughter go through this unit as well. I even sewed her a pioneer dress and bonnet for the big event!

This early learning experience helped foster an interest in pioneers. So it was no surprise that a few years later, I first read Janette Oke’s Love Comes Softly pioneer series. And, like many other readers, I fell in love with the series. Janette Oke’s writing style is gentle yet effective. Her well-controlled writing pace is slower, but so soothing to the spirit. Consequently, I have read these books until the spines collapse. Most have been replaced with sturdier hardback versions. However, you can read them online for free. The basis for this series is the beautiful love story between Clark and Marty on the prairie. Our story opens with the tragic death of Marty’s husband while the newlywed couple is on the wagon trail heading west in search of a better life. With no money or resources, and expecting her first child, Marty finds she has no choice but to accept an offer of marriage from a compassionate widower with a small child. Thus begins the beautifully drawn-out love story of this young couple, as their deep love slowly grows for one another by God’s grace, leading to a long and happy marriage with a large family and a legacy of strong faith. Over the course of this 8-book series, we see their simple faith through all the heartaches, tragedies, and joys of life on the harsh, unforgiving prairie.
