Welcome to Hidden Bluff

welcome to hidden bluff

Welcome to Hidden Bluff! It took a while, but we found the perfect home for this next chapter of life. We are in the middle years right now with adulting kids and elderly parents. These years are packed with stress coming from all sides and are no easy task. Furthermore, our sweet river home was not ample enough for the growing needs. With 4 adults carrying on zoom meetings/classes there were some days I had to hide out in the bathroom. Offices became a must. Additionally, we needed extra space for frequent guests and parents. There is also our own aging to think of as we grow older. It’s a little hard to see these things when younger but now we have a much better idea as we are walking through this process with our parents. We looked for quite a few months and then found Hidden Bluff.

This house didn’t look like much at first glance. However, just like our river home going in was a different story. We realized quickly this clean, mid-century house checked all the boxes and had lots of hidden potential and charm. It was exciting to think of having a fresh palette to decorate. However, we needed to act quickly in our hot market. A month and a half later we are moving in. It was during the buying of the house that the name came to me. While jogging one day I pondered what the name our house should be. I thought about how our home was tucked away- hidden. That sounded promising, but hidden what? Well, the house is also is on a hillside hence the bluff part. Hidden Bluff was born.

The Charm of Hidden Bluff

One of the charming things I love about our new home is the oft nightly gorge winds. Our area has a reputation for strong winds and understandably, not everyone likes the wind. However, to my surprise I fell under their spell after hearing them the first night. Much like the ocean the winds had a haunting sound that made me think of a lonely seaside or being cozy in a house reading Wuthering Heights.

Another thing I love at hidden bluff is the outside upper deck. My parents, eager to unload a lot of furniture so they can downsize, blessed us with this sweet outdoor table that sits on our upper deck under the kitchen window. It’s definitely the new favorite area to sip coffee and wake up in the morning.
And it is on this deck that I enjoy one of the best parts of August- the aroma of blackberries. The heat on the berries creates a delicious smell of summer. Our property line out back has a path lined with them, and the air is now perfumed with the scent of ripe blackberries. Stepping out into the backyard with the heady aroma of blackberries is heavenly!

Mentally, I am tackling each room and sizing up the feel of the room and what it should look like. For the first time I will have an official writing room. There was a shade of paint in my head that I envisioned painting it. While cleaning out what was to be my new workshop, I came across old cans of paint. In the pile was a 5 gallon bucket of very pale green blue paint that was very close to the one I imagined. It was a serendipitous moment as I collected a sample for the walls and found it to be perfection.

A new house is like a new treasure in which you discover things while settling in like the potting shed I had no idea about until we moved in. But around the corner from the potting shed and the periwinkle hydrangeas behind the white fence is a little nook that I have christened “the Secret Garden”. It is here that I hope to turn into a floral haven as well as kitchen garden.

All the possibility is exciting and I look forward to sharing it with you readers of the next few months as I tackle each room!
