An Autumn Centerpiece

An Autumn Centerpiece

“I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.”- Henry David Thoreau

An Autumn Centerpiece. October 4, 2023. Mossy, cooler days mean fewer and fewer flowers in the garden. Many plants are already settling in for their winter sleep which means it is time to tend to the fall garden cleaning. But there are a few roses that are still blooming. And the calendula. The borage has also seeded and sent up new plants a few months early. And of course, hydrangeas are a fall staple although many of ours have already been clipped to dry. There is one bush that is still going that has become a lovely piece for the garden as well as for accents in bouquets. And today I used it to make an Autumn centerpiece.

The Candy Coral Berry found me at the end of the aisle at the nursery a couple of years ago. It was a small plant with bright pink balls that appealed to the girl in me. But this is the danger of having a regular nursery you go to close to home. They are always tantalizing and tempting you with new floral wonders. Of course, I took the bait with this pretty bush. Those cotton candy pink berries about undid me right there! What a beautiful accent bush this would be! And I wasn’t wrong.

Two years later the bush is now a good size and produced lots of pink berries this fall which are now fading to a blush. These berries are beautiful for a bouquet! I also have ghost Coral Berries, but they haven’t been quite as productive, so they are going to get a new home in the yard to see if they will be happier.

I wanted to show you all the pumpkin vase with autumn flowers and candy pink berries I made today. A greenish-orange heirloom pumpkin was gutted and filled with water to act as a vase. Next, I filled it with hydrangeas from SomeTyme Place, pink berries from Hidden Bluff, and deep pink roses from the grocery store. Moss was tucked here and there to add to its fallish-ness. A young strand of ivy. Nothing formal.

So, if you have some foliage left in the yard grab a pumpkin at the store and see what you can dream up!

Have a beautiful day!
