Books for Fall 2026: The Emily Trilogy. September 28, 2026.

Anne Shirley is literature’s best-loved child of Spring. The world owes a large debt to L.M. Montgomery’s for creating Anne, who inspires us with the way she charges through life with a head bursting with romantic ideals, imaginary castles in the sky, and a heart overflowing with love. Anne has a deep well of faith she draws from as she pursues her dreams, scooping up others who happen to be around- often the lonely, unloved, and unbeautiful- and brings them into her apple blossom-filled world. She is not just a character in the dry pages of a book; she is a habit we can’t do without. Anne shows us, from one crazy adventure after another, how to live to the fullest as well as to endure the scrapes in life with grace, whether it is dyeing our hair green or flavoring a cake with liniment.

But Montgomery created other characters. If Anne is a child of pink Spring, then Emily Byrd Starr is a child of crimson Autumn. Emily is L. M. Montgomery’s lesser-known character, a moody and introverted young lady, yet she is also quite comfortable stating her mind and struggles to understand why that bothers other people so much. Anne enjoyed writing, but Emily is a writer. She passionately pursues this calling as she fills page after page of any scrap paper she can find with her childish prose, describing her life and challenges at her new home in New Moon after her father’s death, where her world is the rich shades of Autumn complete with rosy red apple orchards, cheese-making, and boiling potatoes for the pigs. While Emily contrasts Anne in many ways, I am positive they would have been good friends because of it.

Books for Fall 2026

Emily’s books are something I pick up in the Fall because they feel more Fall-ish. It is a trilogy that walks us through a young girl’s journey to becoming a writer and finding love. I have provided the links to read these books for free. After clicking the link, click on the HTML version to read.

• Emily of New Moon. Like Anne, Emily is also an orphan, but this book takes us through her father’s death and the deep pain it causes her, along with an unsympathetic family. But she is a strong girl with dreams of being a poet and a writer. Emily finds life at New Moon a mixed bag, bringing some joys but also a troubled relationship with an aunt who looks at her as a duty. However, she finds several close friends battling their own struggles to share the ups and downs of growing up with. Much to her surprise, Emily comes to love the rich landscape of New Moon deeply and embraces her place in the Murray family with pride.
• Emily Climbs. In this next book, Emily heads off to high school for more education and must leave her beloved New Moon to go board with her least favorite and highly critical aunt, Ruth. She works on developing as a writer while dealing with the challenges of school.
• Emily’s Quest. In this last book, Emily achieves her dreams as a writer when she has her first book published, but she suffers many struggles along the way, including the loss of her mentor, a severe injury that puts her in bed for a long time, and agreeing to marry a man she doesn’t love after losing the one man she does.
