Homemade Weed Killer

Homemade Weed Killer

Homemade Weed Killer, July 11, 2023.

Every time I go out to the garden these days, I feel positive that someone has snuck into our yard in the dead of night and dumped a large sack of weed seeds everywhere. My gardener’s heart finds it quite overwhelming to see the number of weeds popping up daily that are trying to take over the garden. My herbs are being choked faster than I can weed them, and it leaves me feeling helpless. It is kind of like life sometimes. Some seasons feel so overwhelming and that my life is being overrun with the “weeds” of the world. Just thinking about it leaves me feeling consumed and in despair. But there is always that nudge of the Spirit that calls me to draw back and remind myself of who is running the show and put my hope in Him. And though it feels that I need to tackle all these weeds at once He reminds me that I don’t and to keep my eye on what is truly important. So, I look at these masses of weeds in the garden, breathe and take it a bit at a time.

It was evident that weed killer was needed here. However, I wasn’t fond of spraying that much weed killer around the yard. I knew a natural homemade weed killer was in existence, so to the kitchen I went to make it. And of course, headed out to try it right away spraying every weed around me generously. It didn’t take long to see them start to shrivel which admittedly was satisfying. This is a recipe I would use carefully around the soil as you don’t want too much salt build up. The following recipe proved wonderful for our gravel paths and killing the weeds coming up there. Make sure to use on dry plants on a sunny day.

16 oz spray bottle

1 tbsp. table salt (see note below)

White vinegar

Dawn

Fill spray bottle with vinegar leaving a bit of headspace for salt. Add the salt and a few drops of Dawn. Put the spray nozzle back on and shake mixture until dissolved. Use on a sunny day on dry plants.

Note on salt: a lot of these recipes call for Epsom salts which interestingly enough is also used to help feed plants. I used straight table salt with great results.
